Writing, thoughtful
reading, synthesizing of information and love
of literature and learning typify the English
major at Duquesne University.
Because the Duquesne mission is to provide the finest contemporary
liberal arts and professional education, distinguished by
a solid foundation in Catholic values, the Department of
English is committed to developing the skills, the knowledge,
and the conscience of the next generation of leaders, who
will shape the world that they inherit.
The disciplined analysis of literature develops the critical
and analytical skills needed for a wide range of professional
and intellectual pursuits. Intensive study of literature
insures that English majors are well prepared not only for
further academic study in the humanities, but for full participation
in an information age whose affairs are increasingly conducted
in English. The ability to use language with precision,
power, and sophistication is as essential to dealing with
the ethical complexities of contemporary life as it is to
success in the academy, business, or the professions.
